Running Man Episode 164 recap

Hello! Today I will recap Chuseok Special episode - “The Mighty Inheritance” featuring actors Yoo Ah In and Kim Hae Sook.

Opening

The episode starts with Running Man members arriving one by one to Madame Go’s emergency family meeting in crisp fall morning. Family lawyer Kim Hwan is waiting for everyone to announce important news from their grandmother. The first one to arrive is Ha Ha, firstborn grandson of the younger daughter. Right after him, Yoo Jae Suk, second born son of the older daughter arrives. Immediately two of them start insulting each other by calling one another looser. But their quarrel is interrupted by second born son of younger sister – Lee Kwang Soo. At first his older brother doesn’t seem to be happy about it but Kwang Soo’s humility softens his heart. “You two are going to ruin the family” states their cousin Yoo Jae Suk.

Right after Kwang Soo, the youngest and the oldest sons of the older daughter appear – Kim Jong Kook and Ji Suk Jin. Also, younger daughter Song Ji Hyo and her husband Kang Gary arrive to the family meeting. Their sons Ha Ha and Kwang Soo are happy to see how young their mom looks like. “My Mom breastfed me” – happily says the oldest son.

Yoo Ah In – one of today’s Running Man guests and the youngest son of Ji Hyo and Gary makes an appearance. His dad, Gary, all smiley greets his son, while it looks like his mom is meeting him for the first time.

Finally, the oldest daughter is making her way to family meeting hall(?). “Mom” are shouting all her sons. “What?” answers she angrily. All of her sons bow immediately after seeing their mother. They look full of astonishment. Maybe they forgot who their mom is?

So in the end today’s two families battling each other are these:

Song Ji Hyo x Kang Gary family (Ji Hyo, Gary, Ha Ha, Kwang Soo, Yoo Ah In)

Kim Hae Sook x someone (Kim Hae Sook, Suk Jin, Jae Suk, Jong Kook)

Family attorney, Kim Hwan, reads their grandmother message. In the message she says that she lacks energy and she might be counting her last days, so it is time to pass her inheritance. But before giving it to one of the two families, she wants to test them and find out, which family deserves it more. Both families in the end will have to make ultimate dish. In order to get ingredients, they need to pass through various missions.

Attorney handles them personal letters for them where they find out that the first mission will be played in a swimming pool. It looks like both families aren’t happy about it as it is fall already. But what else can they do in order to get grandmother’s inheritance?

First mission – “Hwatu” and flying chairs

It seems like their grandmother isn’t really concerned about her grandchildren health. In this mission, in front of two mothers (Jihyo and Hae Sook), five cards are placed. One of them is “Ddong-Kwang”. Two mothers will take turns to choose a card. And if one of them picks that card, male members of that team will be thrown to the water. Mission will be played “best of five” system, meaning that teams need to win three rounds in order to secure one point. The first team to win two points is the ultimate winner of this mission.

First round already proves that this game will be battle of nerves. Right in the first round, we are down to two cards, one of them being “kwang”. Both mothers decide to go with the closest card and…

Guess who is back?? I guess I would never get bored of this game. “Ah In, how do you feel now?” asks Jae Suk. “I want to be in that chair” he answers. Well, we will see how he will feel sitting there!

“I want to go home with nice and dry clothes” pleads Jae Suk. Mother listens to this request and wins the second round in a row. Well, not without help from opposite family youngest member. 2-0. Now, older daughter family needs only one more round in order to secure point. But this time it looks like the oldest daughter of grandmother decides to joke around.

In the fourth round it’s again down to two cards. This time once again, Ji Hyo decides to listen to Ah In. Sadly, he is wrong again.

In terms of points, Hae Sook team secures first point! Before the start of second game, sad thing happens. Kwang Soo and Ha Ha detects dead grasshopper in the water (grasshopper Yoo? Choi Min Soo?). Jae Suk can’t leave his friend in the water alone. He takes grasshopper out of the water and checks his pulse. Sadly, no chances to bring him back to life.  

But it’s not the end of problems for the Jae Suk’s family. They lose second game by losing three round in a row.

“Mom I’m cold”

Yoo Ah In is still happy about being dry, but not for long! In the last game’s first round he is about to fall in the water. But… The machine malfunctions and Kwang Soo is the only one thrown.

To his misfortune, he has to go back and be thrown again together with Ah In. Pitiful Kwang Soo! After being thrown, Ah In doesn’t seem so happy. He tries to hide it by saying “it was fun”. But we all know how you feel! It looks like Hae Sook decides to make intrigue bigger and loses two rounds in a row. It leads to Ji Hyo’s advantage 2-1. Ji Hyo starts to joke around by saying “Ah In bye!” (aka “Ah In I hope you will be thrown to the water”). And what we see next? Ji Hyo loses final two rounds (meaning that Ah In is being thrown to the water two more times) and gives a win to Hae Sook.

By winning first mission, orange team gets a chance to choose one of two boxes. They decide to go with “Top” box.

Both teams are presented with grandmother’s other letter saying that they might be hungry after playing in the water so they should more to the restaurant.

Second mission – Food battle of your five senses

In this mission in order to be given a chance to answer a question, teams will have to scoot up on their cushions and put them on the table. First person to place their cushion on the table will get to answer the question. The family first to answer three questions will win a mission.

In the first round members will hear sounds of something being made. Both teams struggle from the beginning. They think that fish being cleaned on a chopping board. They correctly guess that something is being unwrapped after that, but there are too many possibilities. After various guesses Ha Ha is the first one to answer correctly – Kimbap.

Next round is taste round. Teams will have to guess what they are tasting. Kwang Soo is first one to put his cushion on a table and he gets rights to try the food first. Family attorney puts some sort of fried food into Kwang Soo’s mouth and…

Kwang Soo tries to guess that it is fried oranges, making other members laugh out of it by saying there is no food like that. But the second one to try, Kim Jong Kook, says that he thinks it is fried grapefruits leaving other members in a state of uncertainty. The third one, Yoo Ah In, decided to go with a tactic – to peel off the batter and to try taste what is inside. It leads to success. Ah In correctly guesses that it is fried gummy worms.

The third round is all about touching senses. The two men, Ha Ha and Ah In, who already passed mission, get rights to see what other members are going to touch. They don’t look pleased with it. But it’s not a problem for Hae Sook. From the first try she correctly guesses that what she the thing she is touching is mackerel.

In the fourth round teams have to smell the food. It takes no time for members to guess that of the foods is egg roll. But they struggle to guess the other two. So Kwang Soo decided to cheat and act like giraffes do.

It magically helps him and he guesses all food correctly, meaning that blue team wins this mission. They give rights to choose for Ah In and he decides to take “Low” box.

Third mission – Find the songpyeon

This mission is all about gathering ten songpyeons in a pot. Teams can either find them or steal them from other team. The first team to close the pot with ten songpyeons inside will be the winner of this mission.

It looks like this mission’s ace is Ah In. In no time he gathers sangpyeons all by himself. The problem is to bring them back and hide them. On the way back he decides to steal one of Hae Sook’s sangpyeons. That’s when first teams fight starts. Yoo Jaesuk, Ji Suk Jin, Hae Sook against Kwang Soo, Ha Ha and Ah In. Ah In successfully steals one sangpyeon from Jae Suk and runs away. After that Kim Jong Kook appear in site and tries to clear up what happened. He invites Ha Ha to talk with his team. They immediately start to tease and he decides to betray his team. “Kwang Soo’s butt”. Orange team gathers around Kwang Soo, lifts him up and steals his sangpyeon from his butt.

At the meantime Hae Sook finally succeeds in finding Blue team’s sangpyeons in a washer. After finding out that their sangpyeons are missing, Ji Hyo reports it to their team. “Kwang Soo. Thanks” says Jae Sook making other team suspect Kwang Soo in betrayal. Everyone starts to blame him although he hasn’t done anything wrong. “We never should have had him” states Gary, making everyone laugh. “Just go study abroad” he continues.

In the end situation is 10 sangpyeons of Blue team against 9 sangpyeons of Orange team. But Blue team still has to deliver them back home and put them into pot. Hae Sook’s hawk eye notices one sangpyeon hidden under Gary’s cameraman bag. She steals it, brings it back home, puts into the lid and secures teams win in this mission.

Winners decide to go with “Top” box again. (Orange team 2 top boxes, 1 low box, Blue team 1 top box, 2 low boxes).

Both teams move to the supermarket where PD allows them to open boxes. They find out that Top box meant big plastic bag and low meant slow one. PD explains that teams will be allowed to use ingredients which will be in those plastic bags and gives them 100 seconds to gather those ingredients.  All members start running around shelves. All of them are in state of chaos. After allocated time ends, Orange team understands that they didn’t take any seasonings, while Blue team finds Kwang Soo’s razor blades.

Final mission – Cooking

In the final mission teams have to prepare dish in one hour using ingredients they brought in their plastic bags.

Team Hae Sook decides to make Kimchi rice cake soup with braised kimchi and chicken and later on submit for evaluation the one which is better. Ji Hyo’s team decides to make braised ribs.

Both teams smoothly cook their dishes and now only judgment part is left. 100 citizens gathered to evaluate and decide which dish is better.

71 citizens out of 100 votes for team Ah In dish and they win golden ladle!

Compared to previous two episodes this one wasn’t really special. I would say guests were a little bit dull, so I rate it as the one below average.
